Danika LeBlanc is a beautiful, curious toddler. Born on December 3rd, 2012, Danika spiked a fever when she was only a few days old. After a brief stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Moncton, Danika's health deteriorated and her doctors made the decision to airlift her to the IWK. The cardiology team at the IWK quickly determined that she needed emergency heart surgery. Thanks in part to the state-of-the-art equipment made possible by your generous donations, Danika received world-class care from the moment she arrived at the IWK, and throughout her stay. A specialized pediatric anesthesia machine and ventilator were used during her lengthy surgery, SMART Syringe Pumps ensured that Danika's medications were administered in accurate doses, and various monitors kept a vigilant watch over her as she recovered in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. All of these pieces of equipment were funded by donors. Danika's parents, Ken and Caroline, experienced a rollercoaster of emotions during the weeks they spent at the IWK. At the same time, Ken says that the care and compassion they received at the IWK made all the difference. "Within 10 minutes of arriving, I think our stress levels went down tenfold," says Ken. The family can't speak highly enough about the interdisciplinary team who helped them through an exceptionally difficult experience – particularly the nursing staff. "Nurses are angels. They have patience like no others," Ken says. Today, Danika is closely monitored by a team of doctors at the Moncton Hospital and the IWK. The IWK cardiology team takes a travelling clinic to Moncton every few months and connects with Danika's Moncton team by conference call whenever needed. From individuals to corporations and regardless of the size of the gift, when you give you ensure that specialized equipment needed for pediatric care is available to Maritime children. Whether you contributed through IWK Radiothons, Telethon, special mailings or as a major gift, your commitment and generosity help make the IWK a centre of excellence known around the world as a leader in children's health care. 2014 Gratitude Report To view a complete version of the IWK Foundation's 2014 Gratitude Report that includes donor lists and feature stories, including how donor generosity made a new breast health centre a reality, please visit www.iwkfoundation.org/gratitudereport.
