YOUR GIVING HELPED "MIGHTY MAX" SURVIVE "It's just a typical fever, nothing to worry about." That's what Max Martin's mom, Julie-Ann Robichaud of Saint-Louis-de-Kent, NB, hoped for when her son's temperature started to soar. Six-year-old Max was immediately admitted to their local hospital for testing. Unable to pinpoint a diagnosis, Max was sent to the IWK's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for care. Julie-Ann kept vigil at Max's bedside as he was placed in an induced coma and continued to deteriorate. As his kidneys and lungs started to shut down, his family prepared for the worst. The PICU care team was unwavering in its care of Max. They helped keep him alive using the highly- specialized medical equipment they had access to, thanks to generous gifts from donors like you. Remarkably, after five weeks in a coma, Max woke up. Max was diagnosed with a rare, life-threatening autoimmune disease called hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis or HLH. A few months later Max successfully received a bone marrow transplant to treat his condition. Now seven, Max continues to do well and will remain in isolation for one year post-surgery. Max lives with his grandparents so that he doesn't pick up any illnesses his siblings may be exposed to at school. Julie-Ann says there are no words to describe how it felt to come so close to losing her son. She is extremely grateful to donors who have helped ensure that excellence in specialized care at the IWK is there for all Maritime families as it was for Max. When you give a gift to the IWK, you can be sure it will have a direct impact on patient care. There were 287,876 patient visits made to the IWK Health Centre in the last year. Every Gift Matters!
